Knocked out but still going strong

St John's Soccer Team

The St John’s Academy (as our youth boys are known) participated in the annual Diocesan Church Tournament held at Turfhall Sports Grounds in Lansdowne.

We were drawn in group C against our neighbor church in the Parish being Emmanuel, St Mary Magdalene from Gugulethu and St Faith’s Church in Plumstead.

The academy boys absolutely flew out of the blocks beating St Faith’s (3-1) and St Mary’s (1-0). Our goal-scorers in the two fixtures were captain fantastic, Ashley (2), Tshepo and Lise. We, however, lost the game against Emmanuel to an unfortunate own goal but qualified for the knockout stage ending second in our group.

We were then drawn against St Martin’s Bergvliet in the quarter finals of the cup section which proved to be a hill too steep to climb and we lost 1-0 with all the boys feeling very fatigued.

Overall, the day was a great success and the boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves having tons of fun playing the beautiful game of soccer.
