St John’s
Parish
The Parish of St John the
Evangelist Wynberg is an evangelical Anglican Parish in association with the
Diocese of Cape Town and consists of six churches:
• St John’s Church, Wynberg
- received legislative
recognition in 1833 – Ordinance 6 of Cape Legislative Council;
- superceded by Act No 9 of
the 1891 Cape Parliament (St John’s Act).
The following churches were
subsequently established (Dates reflect when the church buildings were
consecrated)
• St Luke’s Church, Diep River - 1897
• Christ Church,
Kenilworth - 1907
• St Philip’s Church, Kenwyn - 1921
• Emmanuel Church, Wynberg - 1928
• Church of the Holy Spirit, Kirstenhof - established
1999
Together, these churches
constitute the Parish of St John the Evangelist Wynberg (the Parish). In
addition, a separate Trust was registered in 2003 as a Community Development
initiative of the Parish. This Trust operates independently of, but is
accountable to, the Parish and appointments to its Board of Trustees are made by
the St John’s Parish Council.
The six churches enjoy
equal partner status and all have similar representation on Parish Council and
other Parish bodies. They are a group of churches accountable to, and in
communion with, each other.
The Parish is in
association with the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA) and is part of
the Diocese of Cape Town (Constantia Archdeaconry). In order to ensure that the
evangelical tradition and ethos of the Parish is maintained, an historical
arrangement with the CPSA (Declaration of Association between the Parish of St
John the Evangelist Wynberg and His Grace the Archbishop of Cape Town on behalf
of the Diocese of Cape Town) signed on 30 April 1956 preserves the right of the
Parish to:
-
appoint its own clergy (with the
approval of the Bishop who licenses them),
-
to remunerate its clergy
-
to own its property and manage its
finances
The Parish makes an annual
voluntary contribution to support the work of the Diocese. Clergy and elected
lay representatives participate in Synod and Archdeaconry Councils and serve on
Diocesan committees and bodies as requested.
The Parish uses liturgies
in a manner which expresses its evangelical doctrine. The Parish also uses and
develops other forms of service in accordance with its evangelical tradition.
The evangelical position of
the Parish is more fully described n the following papers:
